‏ Job 5:19-26

Summary for Job 5:19-26: 5:19-26  a six disasters ... even in the seventh: This wisdom formula reflects a sense of completeness (cp. Prov 30:15-31  b).

• This list reflects Mosaic covenant blessings and curses (Lev 26  c; Deut 28  d). Eliphaz thought that people in right relationship with God would be free from famine (Job 5:20  e, 22  f; see Lev 26:4-5  g, 10  h; Deut 28:4-6  i, 8  j, 11-12  k), war (i.e., death, Job 5:20  l) and the destruction it causes (5:21  m, 22  n; see Lev 26:6-8  o; Deut 28:7  p, 48  q), and slander. They will even be at peace with wild animals (Job 5:23  r; see Lev 26:6  s) and the stones of the field. This peace might indicate fertile rather than stony fields (2 Kgs 3:19  t, 25  u; Matt 13:5  v), or it might symbolize wider harmony with the natural world (see Ps 91:11-12  w).
5:24  x nothing will be missing: See Deut 28:11-12  y; cp. Job 1:6-19  z.
5:25  aa descendants ... as plentiful as grass: See Gen 22:17  ab; Lev 26:9  ac; Deut 28:4  ad, 11-12  ae.
