8:24 a Ishmaelites and Midianites were both descendants of Abraham (Gen 16:15 b; 25:2 c).8:27 d An ephod was normally considered part of the priestly garments (Exod 28:6-30 e); one was also worn by Samuel and David (1 Sam 2:18 f; 2 Sam 6:14 g; 1 Chr 15:27 h). But here, as in Judg 17:5 i and 18:14-18 j, the ephod appears to have been some kind of gold image, which in turn became an object of idolatrous worship.
