2:34  a to cause many in Israel to fall: Many Israelites rejected Jesus as the Messiah (see Isa 8:14-15  b).

• a sign from God: See Luke 11:29-30  c; cp. Isa 8:18  d.
2:35  e the deepest thoughts of many hearts: Israel’s true heart—whether for God or against him—would be revealed through their response to Jesus.

• a sword will pierce your very soul: Mary would experience great pain at seeing her son rejected and dying on the cross.
