9:54 ^b call down fire from heaven to burn them up: Some manuscripts add as Elijah did. Three times, Elijah called down fire from heaven against the enemies of God (1 Kgs 18:38 ^c; 2 Kgs 1:1-17 ^d). In their zeal, James and John wanted to do the same.
