‏ Mark 10:37-38

10:37  a The brothers’ request indicates that James and John correctly understood that Jesus was the Messiah (see 8:29  b; 9:2-8  c). However, they completely misunderstood what it meant to be a leader in God’s Kingdom (10:41-45  d).
10:38  e The two brothers didn’t know what they were asking: To share in his glory, they must share in his suffering as servants.

• to drink from the bitter cup: Drinking from a cup is often associated with suffering and death (Ps 75:8  f; Isa 51:17  g, 22  h; Jer 25:15  i; 49:12  j; Lam 4:21  k; see also Mark 14:24  l, 36  m).

• The baptism of suffering recalls Jesus’ total commitment to God’s calling at his baptism, and it speaks of the believer’s own baptism into Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection (Rom 6:3-5  n; Col 2:12  o).
