18:7 a thousands ... ten thousands: This dramatic increase in number between two lines of Hebrew poetry was a way of intensifying the statement (cp. Deut 32:30 b; Ps 91:7 c). Because of his great military victories, David was beginning to eclipse Saul (1 Sam 18:16 d, 30 e; 21:11 f).
