Isaiah 13:6-11
13:6 a When pronouncing judgment that is still in the future, the prophets sometimes spoke as though it had already arrived. This emphasized the urgency of turning back to God (Ezek 30:3 b; Joel 1:15 c; 3:14 d; Obad 1:15 e; Zeph 1:7 f).13:8 g Pangs ... like those of a woman in labor: The day of the Lord brings sudden and overpowering pain and fear for the wicked (see also Jer 30:6 h; Hos 13:13 i; Mic 4:9 j, 10 k; 5:3 l).
13:10 m Cosmic upheaval and darkness are common images for the day of the Lord, a time of God’s judgment (see also Ezek 32:7-8 n; Joel 2:10 o, 31 p; 3:15 q; Matt 24:29 r; Mark 13:24 s; Rev 6:12-13 t; 8:12 u; cp. Isa 30:26 v).
