‏ John 12:37-50

12:37  a Jesus’ work was finished, yet most of the people ... did not believe in him. His sermons before the world were complete and the signs had been displayed, but he was rejected (1:11  b).
Summary for John 12:39-40: 12:39-40  c The people couldn’t believe: John quotes Isa 6:10  d to explain Israel’s unbelief (see Matt 13:13-15  e; Mark 4:12  f; Luke 8:10  g; Acts 28:26-27  h). When revelation comes, we must believe. If we refuse, the light disappears (John 12:35-36  i). When God’s light departs from the world, the darkness closes over unbelieving hearts.
12:41  j Isaiah had glimpsed the Messiah’s glory and how the world would respond (see Isa 6:10  k).
Summary for John 12:42-43: 12:42-43  l Many people did believe in him, but they wouldn’t admit it. To follow Jesus involves telling others about him despite the social consequences (1:35-51  m; 4:1-42  n).
Summary for John 12:44-50: 12:44-50  o Jesus makes a final appeal for belief. These verses summarize chs 1–12  p. Jesus was sent by the Father, the sole source of his ministry. Jesus is the light shining in darkness to bring salvation and eternal life to all who believe in him.
Summary for John 12:49-50: 12:49-50  q The greatest error is for people to see the light and reject it, thinking it has no connection with the Father who sent the light.
