‏ John 14:15-26

14:15  a If you love me: Because Jesus loves the Father, he is obedient to what God directs him to say and do (12:49  b). If we love him, we will obey him too (14:21  c, 23  d; 15:10  e, 14  f; see 1 Jn 2:3-4  g; 5:2  h).
14:16  i another Advocate: The Spirit continues Jesus’ work by advising, defending, and protecting believers.
14:17  j The Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth (literally the Spirit of truth; see also 15:26  k; 16:13  l), communicates the truth about God. The Spirit maintains Jesus’ presence in the world, duplicating and sustaining Jesus’ work.
14:18  m Jesus had already assured his followers that they would not be spiritual orphans and that he would return to them (14:1-4  n). While he is away, they will be filled with the Spirit, who will sustain them with his presence (14:12-17  o).
14:20  p Jesus’ resurrection (14:19  q) inaugurated his spiritual union with his disciples, which is parallel to the union he enjoys with the Father (see 15:4-5  r; 1 Jn 1:3  s).
14:22  t Several men are named Judas in the New Testament. Judas, the brother of Jesus, (Mark 6:3  u) wrote the epistle of Jude. Judas, the son of James, whom John is referring to here, is listed as an apostle in Luke 6:16  v; he is elsewhere identified as Thaddaeus (Matt 10:3  w; Mark 3:18  x).

• Lord, why? Judas posed an important question. If Jesus planned to return mightily from death, why not use the opportunity to reveal himself definitively to the world and validate his power and identity?
Summary for John 14:23-24: 14:23-24  y Jesus answered Judas’s question, explaining that his coming would be a profound spiritual revelation beyond the world’s grasp.

• Jesus’ coming would occur in three experiences: his resurrection, the coming of the Spirit, and his second coming. When he comes in the Spirit, he and the Father will reside within believers, making a home with each of them (see study note on 14:2).
14:26  z Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit (see also 14:16  aa; 15:26  ab; 16:7  ac, 12-14  ad).

• The Spirit will teach ... everything, recalling Jesus’ words and clarifying their meaning. John experienced this power as he wrote his Gospel (2:22  ae); Christians experience this work of the Spirit as they read the Scriptures.
