‏ John 15:18-27

Summary for John 15:18-27: 15:18-27  a Disciples must be like their master in every respect, both in showing love and obedience and in experiencing the antagonism of those who oppose their message (15:20-21  b; see 9:1-41  c; 11:16  d). If the darkness is opposed to the light (1:5  e), and if Jesus’ followers are bearers of that light in the world (1 Jn 1:7  f; 2:9  g), they should expect the world to hate them in the way it hated Jesus (see John 17:14  h). Jesus’ disciples share his separation from and conflict with the world.
15:20  i A slave is not greater than the master: See study note on 13:16. Jesus’ disciples should mirror him in every way, even in his experience of persecution and martyrdom.
Summary for John 15:22-24: 15:22-24  j But now they have no excuse: Jesus’ ministry provided both words (15:22  k) and works (15:24  l) as evidence that pointed to God. Once people have heard and seen him, they are accountable.
15:25  m They hated me without cause: This Old Testament citation reveals the unwarranted anger of those who belong to the darkness.
15:26  n But I will send you the Advocate—the Spirit of truth: Like a legal advocate, the Holy Spirit counsels and protects Jesus’ followers.
15:27  o Disciples are not alone when they testify about Christ (Matt 28:20  p). The Spirit accompanies them, providing the words to say (Matt 10:19-20  q).
