‏ Mark 9:38-41

Summary for Mark 9:38-41: 9:38-41  a An unknown exorcist was casting out demons in Jesus’ name though he was not one of the twelve disciples (9:38-40  b). John objected, but Jesus corrected him.

• we told him to stop: Cp. 10:35-43  c; Luke 9:51-55  d.

• The success of the unknown exorcist is contrasted with the failure of the disciples in the previous account (Mark 9:14-29  e).
9:40  f The negative parallel to this proverb is found in Luke 11:23  g. These two proverbs should be understood as complementary, not contradictory, for Luke includes them both (Luke 9:50  h; 11:23  i). The exorcist casting out demons in Jesus’ name was not against Jesus, but for him.
