1 Paul salutes the Corinthians;3 he encourages them against troubles, by the comforts and deliverances which God had given him, as in all his afflictions,8 so particularly in his late danger in Asia.12 And calling both his own conscience and theirs to witness of his sincere manner of preaching the immutable truth of the gospel,15 he excuses his not coming to them, as proceeding not of lightness, but of his lenity towards them. 1 Paul testifies his thankfulness to God, and his love towards them, for the fruits of their faith, and fellowship in his sufferings;9 daily praying to him for their increase in grace;12 he shows what good the faith of Christ had received by his troubles at Rome;21 and how ready he is to glorify Christ either by his life or death;27 exhorting them to unity;28 and to fortitude in persecution. 1 We are to rejoice under the cross;5 to ask patience of God;13 and in our trials not to impute our weakness, or sins, to him,19 but rather to hearken to the word, to meditate on it, and to do thereafter.26 Otherwise men may seem, but never be, truly religious. 1 He blesses God for his manifold spiritual graces;10 shewing that the salvation in Christ is no news, but a thing prophesied of old;13 and exhorts them accordingly to a godly conversation, forasmuch as they are now born anew by the word of God.
