In the larger sense, it seems to have denoted all the desert and mountainous tract, lying between the wilderness of Shur westward, and mount Seir, or the land of Edom, eastward, the land of Canaan northward, and the Red sea southward. And in this sense, it seems to have comprehended the wilderness of Sin, and the wilderness of Sinai, also the adjoining tract wherein lay Kibroth-hattaavah and Hazeroth. In this sense it may be understood in De 1:19, where, by "that great and terrible wilderness," is intended the wilderness of Paran in its largest acceptation; for, in its stricter acceptation, it seems not to have been so great and terrible a wilderness; but is taken to denote more peculiarly that part of Arabia Petræa which lies between mount Sinai and Hazeroth west, and mount Seir east. 12:16; 32:8; De 1:19,23; 9:23 4 5 Caleb.30; 14:6,24,30,38; 26:65; 27:15-23; 34:19; De 31:7-17; Jos 14:6-15Jos 15:13-19; Lu 1:10-15; 1Ch 4:15 7 Oshea.16Jehoshua.11:28; 27:18-22; Ex 17:9-13; 24:13; 32:17; De 31:7,8,14,23; 34:9Jos 1:1-9,16; 24:1-33Joshua. 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 Oshea.Ho 1:1; Ro 9:25Jehoshua.8; 14:6,30; Ex 17:9; Mt 1:21-23; Ac 7:45; Heb 4:8Jesus. southward.21,22; Ge 12:9; 13:1; Jos 15:3; Jud 1:15the mountain.14:40; Ge 14:10; De 1:44; Jud 1:9,19 Ex 3:8; Eze 34:14 19 whether it be.Ne 9:25,35; Eze 34:14good courage.30,31; De 31:6-8,23; Jos 1:6,9; 2:3,22,23; 1Ch 22:11; Heb 13:6the firstripe.23,24; Mic 7:1 from the wilderness of Zin.The wilderness of Zin, is different from that called Sin. (Ex 16:1.) The latter was near Egypt, but the former was near Kadesh Barnea, not far from the borders of Canaan. It seems to be the valley mentioned by Burckhardt; which, under the names of El Ghor and El Araba, form a continuation of the valley of the Jordan, extending from the Dead sea to the eastern branch of the Red sea. The whole plain presents to the view an appearance of shifting sands, whose surface is broken by innumerable undulations and low hills. A few talk, tamarisk, and rethem trees grow among the sand hills; but the depth of sand precludes all vegetation of herbage. 20:1; 27:14; 33:36; 34:3,4; De 32:51; Jos 15:1Rehob.Rehob was a city, afterwards given to the tribe of Asher, situated near mount Lebanon, at the northern extremity of the Promised Land, on the road which leads to Hamath, and west of Laish or Dan: compare Jud 1:31; 18:28; Jos 19:28. Harmer says, high walls are still to be seen in Arabia, and are deemed a sufficient defence against the Arabs, who scarcely ever attempt to plunder except on horseback. The monastery on Mount Sinai, and the convent of St. Anthony in Egypt, are surrounded with a very high wall, without gates; the persons and things being taken up and let down through an opening in the upper part, by means of a pulley and a basket. This kind of walling is a sufficient defence. we have seen.9:2; Jos 11:22; 15:14; Jud 1:10,20; 2Sa 21:16-22 21 he shall.20:1-4; Ex 14:14,25; Jos 10:42; 1Sa 17:45,46; 2Ch 14:11,12; 32:8Ne 4:20; Ps 46:11; Isa 8:9,10; Ro 8:31,37according.Ex 7:1-25; 15:1-27; Ps 78:11-13,43-51; 105:27-36 in the wilderness.Ex 16:1-17:16; Ne 9:12-23; Ps 78:14-28; 105:39-41bare thee.32:11,12; Ex 19:4; Nu 11:11,12,14; Isa 40:11; 46:3,4; 63:9Ho 11:3,4; Ac 13:18; *marg: 2Ch 20:20; Ps 78:22; 106:24; Isa 7:9; Heb 3:12,18,19; Jude 1:5 Who went.Ex 13:21; Nu 10:33; Ps 77:20; Eze 20:6in fire.Ex 13:21,22; 14:19,20,24; 40:34-38; Nu 9:15-22; 10:11,12; 14:14Ne 9:12; Ps 78:14; 105:39; Isa 4:5,6; Zec 2:5
