‏ 1 John 2

Christ Is Our Advocate

1 aMy little children, I am bwriting these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, cwe have an
Or Intercessor
eAdvocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;
2and He Himself is fthe
I.e., means of reconciliation with God by atoning for sins; or sin-offering
propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also hfor the sins of the whole world.

3 iBy this we know that we have come to jknow Him, if we kkeep His commandments. 4The one who says, “ lI have come to mknow Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a nliar, and othe truth is not in him; 5but whoever pfollows His word, in him the qlove of God has truly been perfected. rBy this we know that we are in Him: 6the one who says that he sremains in Him tought, himself also, walk just as He walked.

7 uBeloved, I am vnot writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had wfrom the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard. 8
Lit Again
On the other hand, I am writing ya new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because zthe darkness is passing away and aathe true Light is already shining.
9The one who says that he is in the Light and yet abhates his acbrother or sister is in the darkness until now. 10 adThe one who loves his brother and sister remains in the Light, and there is nothing in him to cause stumbling. 11But the one who aehates his brother or sister is in the darkness and afwalks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has agblinded his eyes.

12 I am writing to you, ahlittle children, because aiyour sins have been forgiven you on account of His name. 13I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him ajwho has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because akyou have overcome althe evil one. I have written to you, children, because amyou know the Father. 14I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him anwho has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are aostrong, and the apword of God remains in you, and aqyou have overcome the evil one.

Do Not Love the World

15 Do not love arthe world nor the things in the world. asIf anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world, atthe lust of the flesh and authe lust of the eyes and avthe boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 awThe world is passing away and also its lusts; but the one who axdoes the will of God continues to live forever.

18 Children, ayit is the last hour; and just as you heard that azantichrist is coming, baeven now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. 19 bbThey went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, bcso that
Lit they would be revealed
it would be evident that they all are not of us.
20
Lit And
But you have an bfanointing from bgthe Holy One, and bhyou all know.
21I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but bibecause you do know it, and
Or you know that no lie
because no lie is bkof the truth.
22Who is the liar except blthe one who denies that Jesus is the
I.e., Messiah
Christ? This is bnthe antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son.
23 boWhoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24As for you, see that what you heard bpfrom the beginning remains in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also bqwill remain in the Son and in the Father.

The Promise Is Eternal Life

25 brThis is the promise which He Himself
Lit promised us
made to us: eternal life.

26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to btdeceive you. 27And as for you, the buanointing which you received from Him remains in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing bvteaches you about all things, and is bwtrue and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you,
Or remain in Him (a command)
you remain in Him.

28 Now, bylittle children, remain in Him, so that when He bzappears, we may have caconfidence and cbnot
Lit be put to shame from Him
draw back from Him in shame
Or in His presence
at His cecoming.
29If you know that cfHe is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness also cghas been born of Him.
