Psalms 79

Grieving over the Destruction of Jerusalem, and Prayer for Help.

A Psalm of Asaph.

1 God, the anations have
Lit come into
invaded cYour inheritance;
They have defiled Your dholy temple;
They have elaid Jerusalem in ruins.
2 They have given the fdead bodies of Your servants to the birds of the sky as food,
The flesh of Your godly ones to the animals of the earth.
3 They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem;
And there was gno one to bury them.
4 We have become a hdisgrace before our neighbors,
An object of derision and ridicule to those around us.
5 iHow long, Lord? Will You be angry forever?
Will Your jjealousy kburn like fire?
6 lPour out Your wrath upon the nations which mdo not know You,
And upon the kingdoms which ndo not call upon Your name.
7 For they have odevoured Jacob
And plaid waste his
Lit pasture
settlement.

8 rDo not
Lit remember against us
hold us responsible for
Or our former sins
the guilty deeds of our forefathers;
Let Your compassion come quickly to umeet us,
For we have vbecome very low.
9 wHelp us, God of our salvation, for the glory of xYour name;
And save us and
Lit cover over, atone for
,
zforgive our sins aafor the sake of Your name.
10 abWhy should the nations say, “Where is their God?”
Let acvengeance for the blood of Your servants which has been shed
Be known among the nations in our sight.
11 Let adthe groaning of the prisoner come before You;
According to the greatness of Your
Lit arm
power, let
Lit the sons of death
those who are agdoomed to die remain.
12 And return to our neighbors ahseven times as much aiinto their lap
Their ajtaunts with which they have taunted You, Lord.
13 So we Your people and the aksheep of Your
Or pasturing
pasture
Will amgive thanks to You forever;
To all generations we will antell of Your praise.
