As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.

Now as they went on their
way,
Jesus entered a village.
And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.

But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, ‘Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’

But Martha was
distracted with much serving.
And she
went up to him and
said, “
Lord, do
you not care that my sister has
left me to
serve alone?
Tell her then to help me.”

‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered,
‘you are worried and upset about many things,

But the
Lord answered her,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,

Now a man named Lazarus was ill. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.

So when Martha heard that Jesus was

house.

‘Lord,’ Martha said to Jesus, ‘if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
(ESV)
Martha said to Jesus, “
Lord,

been here,
my brother would
not have
died.

Martha answered, ‘I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’
(ESV)
Martha said to
him, “I
know that he will
rise again in the
resurrection on the
last day.”
(NIV)
Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.

‘Take away the stone,’ he said.
‘But, Lord,’ said Martha, the sister of the dead man, ‘by this time there is a bad odour, for he has been there four days.’

him, “
Lord, by this
time there will be an
odor,
for he has
been dead
four days.”

Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honour. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.

So they gave a
dinner for him there.
Martha served,
and Lazarus was one of those
reclining with
him at
table.
