After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, ‘Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?’
When they came to Capernaum, the

your teacher not pay the
tax?”

When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak.
‘What do you think, Simon?’ he asked.
‘From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes – from their own children or from others?’He

him first,
saying,
“What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?”

‘Then the children are exempt,’ Jesus said to him.

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’
Then Peter came up and

Peter answered him, ‘We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?’
Then Peter said in
reply, “
See,

Peter replied, ‘Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.’

all fall away because of
you,
I will
never fall away.”

But Peter declared, ‘Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.’ And all the other disciples said the same.

not deny you!”

‘Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?’ he asked Peter.

But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.

Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him. ‘You also were with Jesus of Galilee,’ she said.

After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, ‘Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.’

‘Before the cock crows, you will disown me three times.’ And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Immediately the cock crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him:
‘Before the cock crows twice you will disown me three times.’ And he broke down and wept.
And immediately the

second time.
And Peter remembered how Jesus had
said to
him,
“Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he
broke down and
wept.

‘I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.’ Jesus said,
“I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.
